To the People Behind the Work

A love letter to those who keep civic and social progress alive

I’m writing this letter to speak directly to the people who choose their purpose.

Yes, you.

The ones who take the path that’s about others, not just themselves.

This is for the people working inside civic government and those driving nonprofit organizations.

The people who develop programs, write policy, build campaigns, file grants, organize events, and field tough questions from the community.

The people who keep showing up—quietly, relentlessly, without asking for applause.

This is for you.

Rarely Making Headlines

At Pastilla, we’ve spent a decade partnering with civic agencies and nonprofits. What we’ve learned is that the work you do is seismic.

You run systems of every sort.
You design access.
You fill the gaps where other systems fall short—sometimes in a whole crisis, sometimes one small interaction at a time.

We’ve seen teams working to make cities more inclusive, helping communities understand what’s changing, and communicating clearly when confusion could be costly.

We’ve seen nonprofit staff navigating both public need and internal strain—meeting growing demand while holding onto the mission that brought them here.

We’ve seen how your work draws on creativity, policy, outreach, technology, and trust to connect people with what they need.

And we’ve seen how often that work is invisible to the public, but deeply felt by those it reaches.

Behind all of that are people—like you.

Not superheroes.
Not martyrs.
Just humans trying to move things forward.

You could have chosen other jobs. You didn’t. You chose here.

It’s Getting More Complex

We also know it’s becoming increasingly complex.

Budgets are shrinking.
Teams are stretched.
Time is short.
You’re being asked to do more with less.

In nonprofit spaces, you’re dealing with fluctuating funding, rising demand, and the pressure to demonstrate outcomes while remaining authentic.

In civic government, you’re juggling transparency, politics, legacy systems, and the needs of real people—with real expectations.

And yet—you keep going.
That’s why we wrote this.
Not to offer solutions or silver linings.
But to tell you: we see what you’re carrying.

And we respect it. Deeply.

Our Roles

At Pastilla, we work in brand, campaigns, and digital strategy. But we see ourselves as partners in something larger.

We help clarify complex missions.
We shape communication that connects. We design systems that help people feel seen, informed, and respected.

And more than anything, we aim to stand with you—to amplify the work you’re already doing, and to make your day-to-day just a little easier.

It’s a Collective Effort

This letter is for the entire ecosystem of public goods: The grant writers and GIS analysts, the project managers and planners, the IT folks who keep the portals running, the outreach coordinators stitching communities together, the designers who make benefits easier to access, the program assistants who stay late to close the loop, and the executive directors, interns, finance staff, policy aides, and community liaisons who hold everything together. It’s for anyone whose work touches a life—and does so with care.

You are the connective tissue. The bridge between government and community.

Between mission and action.
Between what’s broken and what’s possible.
You don’t always get seen.
But you matter.
You are essential. And we’re grateful to walk beside you.

With deep respect,
Rudy & Pastilla

On a Personal Note

I experienced firsthand the importance of community when my family was affected by the Altadena fires.
What stayed with me wasn’t just the loss—it was how people showed up. Neighbors. Volunteers. City, County, State & Federal workers. Emergency crews. Quiet helpers making it possible to get through the hardest days.

That experience made Pastilla’s mission even clearer. Because the same people who build the frameworks of response and recovery are the same people we’re proud to support every day. They are you.
