Hidden Fun: Easter Eggs on the Black Girls Code Website
When redesigning the Black Girls Code website, we wanted to add a small, playful twist – something unexpected that would spark curiosity and inspire the next generation of young coders. The result? Three hidden Easter eggs waiting to be discovered by those who love to explore and experiment with code.
The first hidden feature triggers a Matrix-style animation when a special word is entered into the browser console. The second reveals a secret content section on the homepage after typing a specific keyboard sequence. The third changes the mouse cursor when users quickly click the site’s logo five times in a row.
To make these surprises discoverable but not too obvious, we built a subtle hint system inside the console. Each time the page reloads, visitors see an inspirational quote from a famous woman, and every fifth reload drops a small clue on how to unlock one of the Easter eggs.
These interactions weren’t just for fun—they were designed to inspire curiosity, experimentation, and a sense of discovery among girls learning to code. All quotes and hidden content can be managed directly in the website’s admin panel, making it easy for the BGC team to update or expand the experience over time.
